She was silent on the drive back. With the increase in traffic, the ton headed to the park for the Promenade Hour along with the usual drays, horses, carriages and pedestrians, he had to focus too much attention on driving to be able to question her.
After pulling up the carriage in front of her sisterâs town house, he jumped down to assist her. No way was he going to cede to his tiger the opportunity to touch her again.
He hoped she might invite him in, but as he escorted her up the stairs, she said, âForgive me for parting in haste, but I must hurry. Iâve promised my niece and nephews a round of stories before supper.â
âMustnât disappoint the young ones.â Though he was disappointed. âIâll see you again, then. Soon.â
She gave him a slight smile. âIf you like.â
âI do.â
âThen I suppose I will. Good day, Lord Stratham. Thank you again for the drive.â
âMy pleasure, Miss Hasterling.â
And it had been. He watched her enter the house and walk down the passage, not taking his leave until the door closed behind her.
Sheâd seemed...withdrawn those last few minutes in the Park, after sheâd pulled him to the pond and trapped his fingers in hers.
Was she embarrassed to have revealed that glimpse of her passionate, impulsive nature? To have seized and held his fingers while he gazed into her eyes, seeing in them the same desire that was flooding him?
He supposed the mother and sisters whoâd criticised her for skipping on rocks and muddying her hems would have deplored such uninhibited enthusiasm.
He loved it. Her passionate conviction and complete devotion to the task she was engaged in. Her determination to find beauty and worth wherever she looked.
Oh, yes, he wanted to see more of her.
